Identified the virus strain of Chikungunya responsible for outbreak in Italy

The Spallanzani Institute has isolated the Chikungunya virus strain responsible for the infection in Lazio. It has been denominated CHIKV / ITA / Lazio-INMI1-2017. The virus was characterized on a molecular basis. The sequence has been deposited at the National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Institute of Health, USA, and will soon be accessible to the scientific community.

Meanwhile, cases of infection in Rome and Anzio are growing. To date, a total of 92 Chikungunya cases were reported to the Seresmi (Regional Surveillance Unit for Infectious Diseases).
